KITCHEN INSPIRATION | November 2021

In the Kitchen with String® & Michelin Chef Karim Khouani

Swedish storage specialists String® invited Karim Khouani into the String® kitchen to discuss all things cooking, covering his influences, career and thoughts on what makes a good kitchen.

My life revolves around food, from early morning to bedtime. My thoughts revolve around meals, drinks and ingredients. I come from the south of France and grew up in Marseille, which is filled with the smells of wonderful boulangeries and cheese shops. My favourite dish is red mullet, a small Mediterranean saltwater fish, and my favourite utensil is a good spoon to try everything", shares Karim.

Influenced by the heritage of his Italian mother and Moroccan father, Karim understands quality, taste, spices and seasonal products intrinsically. From a pastry chef at 14, he worked his way up and landed a job with Marco Pierre White at Holland Park in a few short years. He is now a celebrity in southern Sweden where he became the first restaurateur in the country to receive a star in the famous Michelin Guide.

Karim Khouani's Top Kitchen Design Tips

  • When you cook a lot, you want to have lots of open shelves, as is the case with String. You don't want to have too many doors and cupboards. You don't need to, because everything on the shelves is used almost every day.
  • And you want to have everything to hand. Hooks, hangers and bars are a really great way to keep utensils and pans handy. Metal shelves are tough and look better as you get older.
  • What I particularly like about String are the cork accessories such as the coasters on which you can put a hot pan to cool down - and of course the bottle holder for the wine!

Yellowstone Club in Montana's Rocky Mountains

Located in Big Sky, Montana, Yellowstone Club is designed by Lauren Weiss Home and reflects the grandeur of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the mountain views, while the abundant use of wood panelling and natural materials like wool, mohair, stone and leather harness the warmth of nature.

Specially commissioned artwork is paired carefully with selected furniture from De La Espada including the Frame Sofa and Solo Oblong Table by Neri&Hu and Elysia Lounge Chair and Laurel Side Table by Luca Nichetto.

St John Church in Hackney by John Pawson

British designer John Pawson has collaborated with architecture studio Thomas Ford & Partners on the refurbishment of the St John church in Hackney, London. The overhaul, which is Pawson's first church project in the UK, focuses on reinstating and accentuating the Grade II-listed building's original design that was hidden by past renovations.

The interiors have been stripped back to the original plan, allowing Pawson to showcase his signature minimalist approach to space and detailing. Dark oak panels line the walls, featuring a ribbed finish that echoes the church's columns. The space is complete with furniture from British makers Another Country.

Photography by Katrina Lawson Johnston & Gilbert McCarragher.
